You're Part of a Larger Community

You are truly not alone. According to the National Center for Education.

  • 21% of U.S. adults (about 43 million people) read below a 5th-grade level

  • Only 1 in 7 adults who struggle with reading is brave enough to ask for help

  • Many struggle to find instruction to meet their needs

Today you are taking the first steps to doing something very bold and also very life-changing! Being an adult who struggles with reading can feel lonely and make you vulnerable.  We’re here to tell you, you are not alone

We have worked with many adults who were exactly where you are now. They took a risk that felt scary at first, but it changed everything for them.

There are a few important things I want you to share with you.

It's Not Your Fault

Your struggle with reading is not your fault. You didn't goof off too much. You weren't too lazy. You were trying, and it wasn't because you weren't smart enough.

You likely struggled with dyslexia which is a difference in how your brain is wired. This actually comes with many strengths once you learn how to overcome the reading challenges.

Not All Reading Instruction Works the Same

You may be thinking: "I've had tons of teachers tell me they could teach me to read but I couldn’t learn. Why will this be different?"

The truth is that just because a teacher can teach doesn't mean they know how to teach everyone to read. Students with dyslexia need specific instruction to help activate certain parts of the brain.

Since the early 70s most reading instruction was called "Balanced Literacy." This teaching approach moved away from the phonics instruction that students like you desperately needed.

Special Education Wasn't Enough

IEPs (individualized education plan) were legally mandated during the 1970’s. They focused on accommodations rather than effective reading instruction. If you had an IEP, you were probably provided support like extra time or reduced workload rather than specialized, evidence-based reading instruction specifically designed for dyslexia. The specific instruction would have actually taught you to read.
